Camping Near Thessaloniki: 5 Campsites in Halkidiki

Land at Thessaloniki airport, drive an hour or two, and you are under the pines with the sea a few steps away. Halkidiki, the three-fingered peninsula south of the city, is one of the best places in Greece for camping. Kassandra is the busier, more developed side; Sithonia is wilder, greener, and where most campsites are.

Note: free camping on the beaches of Halkidiki is not allowed and can lead to fines. Stay at organised campsites, check each campsite's official website for opening dates and prices, and book ahead in July and August.

1. Ouzouni Beach Camping: the closest to Thessaloniki

Where: At the start of Kassandra, about 60 km from Thessaloniki, near Nea Moudania.

Why go: The shortest drive from the city and the airport, right on the beach.

Best for: A first or last night of a trip, or a quick weekend escape from Thessaloniki.

2. Blue Dream Camping: Sani, Kassandra

Where: On the western side of Kassandra, in the Sani area.

Why go: A beautiful natural setting on one of the best-known coastlines of Halkidiki.

Best for: Travellers who want Kassandra's beaches with a campsite atmosphere.

3. Camping Sithon: pine forest and sea

Where: In Sithonia, near the village of Metamorfosi, about 90 km from Thessaloniki.

Why go: A pine forest right by the beach, with a mini market and a bar on site. Its beach has received the EU Blue Flag.

Best for: Families and groups who want the mountains-meet-the-sea feeling of Sithonia without driving too far.

4. Camping Armenistis: Sithonia's east coast

Where: In Sithonia, about 119 km from Thessaloniki.

Why go: A Blue Flag beach and some of the most striking scenery in Halkidiki.

Best for: Travellers who want a lively, well-known campsite by a great beach.

5. Camping Tsitreli: the quiet south

Where: Kalamitsi, in southern Sithonia, about 160 km from Thessaloniki. The campsite is 50 metres from the sandy beach.

Why go: The far south of Sithonia is calmer and wilder, with clear water and small rocky bays.

Best for: Anyone who wants to slow down, snorkel and escape the crowds.

Tips for camping in Halkidiki

• Most visitors arrive at Thessaloniki airport (SKG). A car makes it much easier to reach Sithonia.
• Pick a pitch in the shade. Summer afternoons are hot.
• Bring a light sleeping bag or liner; nights by the sea are warm.
• Stake your tent well. Strong summer winds are common on the Aegean coast.
• Many campsites have a mini market or taverna, so you may not need a stove.
